Support Staff – Music Graduate
● Reporting to the Director of Music and the Deputy Head (a member of the School’s Leadership Team), and ultimately to the Head.
● Responsibility for the welfare and care of all the boarders and supporting senior staff in the day to day running of the boarding department.
● To develop the Graduate’s specialist knowledge and provide excellent experience for those considering a career in education.
● This is a residential post with single private accommodation.
● Initially a One year fixed term contract.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The role will encompass the following main areas:
MUSIC
Assisting the Director of Music and the Music Department in the following ways:
● Organise a practice rota for musicians in Years 3 – 8. Supervise music practice and provide advice and encouragement for our developing musicians.
● Participate in all the extra-curricular music ensembles including singing with the Chapel Choir and playing with the orchestra.
● Maintaining the environment of the Music Department, tidying, organising music and updating classroom displays.
● Teaching alongside other music staff as a Teaching Assistant in class music lessons.
● Attending all Music Department trips including residential trips and tours.
● Administrative responsibilities including maintaining the music lesson timetable board, producing parts for ensembles and any other reasonable requests to support the Director of Music.
● Assisting with Music Theatre productions including making props, helping with costumes and working on the lights and sound.
● Act as a steward for Associated Board Music exams
● Be a musical role model for the aspiring young musicians at Queen Mary’s School helping to promote music and inspire our students to pursue musical excellence.

BOARDING
● Ensuring the well-being, safety, discipline and pastoral care of all boarders;
● Being fully versed in, and compliant with, all the school’s procedures;
● Knowing and treating each child in their care as an individual and encouraging self-discipline and a sense of responsibility;
● Helping to create a calm, quiet and tidy living and working environment;
● Supervising efficiently the day-to-day routines of normal boarding school life, including registration, meals, preps. and bedtimes;
● Working with students on chosen subject specialism as agreed with the head of subject;
● Being able in case of emergency to remain ‘on call’ when not on active boarding duty during the day;
● Ensuring that dorms and common rooms are kept clean and tidy and liaising with the Head of Boarding over maintenance, laundry, cleaning, furniture and furnishings;
● Helping to organise and supervise the extra-curricular life of the students to ensure that they are able to discharge their academic and other obligations efficiently, and find interest and stimulus appropriate to their age and development;
● Liaising with the Head of Boarding and school nurse over general concerns and in emergencies;
● Helping to ensure the smooth running of the house;
● Attending weekly team meetings as required;
● Helping the Head of Boarding to maintain good relations and communications with all parents;
● Being in residence two days before the beginning and after the end of terms as required;
● Maintaining good communication with the Head of Boarding. This includes maintaining detailed and confidential written logs;
● Implementing the health and safety policy of the school;
● Participating in the staff performance management process;
● Promoting the general progress and well-being of all students;
● Assist in the running of the enrichment programme offered to the students
Duties may be developed through time, as required, for the welfare and happiness of the House
Other responsibilities:
In addition, the Music Graduate may be required to:
● Create an environment where different cultures and backgrounds are recognised, respected and accepted
● Support other departments within the school from time to time as requested by the head
● Complete, with priority, any other reasonable tasks as required by the head
● Be flexible to cover additional shifts as required
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications
A Music Graduate with a high level of performance in at least one instrument
Piano skills would be an advantage
Be a passionate musician with the ability to inspire and engage young people in music
Knowledge of music technology would be an advantage
Be responsible and a team player, willing to immerse themselves in the activities of a very busy, vibrant department
Interest and experience of Music Theatre would be an advantage
